Intergenerational Equity & Biodiversity:
Securing a Future in Harmony with Nature for Children, Youth, and Future Generations
The importance of intergenerational equity as a principle of biodiversity action is affirmed by the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), a global plan to address biodiversity loss and move towards living in harmony with nature. In its Section C, the KMGBF states that:
“The implementation of the Framework should be guided by the principle of intergenerational equity, which aims to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs and to ensure meaningful participation of younger generations in decision-making processes at all levels.”

Following its recognition, there remains to be a gap in articulating how this youth-championed principle can be applied — in policy, implementation, as well as in systemic interventions to address biodiversity loss. This policy brief shares youth perspectives on how intergenerational equity can become a reality for the benefit of all life on Earth and future generations.
