Our Work in Europe

Even though Europe in the past has been under intensive development at the cost of biodiversity, Europe presently has been progressing as a community where the issues of biodiversity and nature conservation bring Europeans together, with long-term projects coming into fruition to preserve, protect and restore much of the lost biodiversity.

The GYBN Regional Youth Capacity-Building Workshop for Europe took place in August 2019 in Wassergspreng near Vienna, Austria, where young people working in biodiversity fields from all over Europe came together to:

  • learn about international and European biodiversity conservation policy within the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD);

  • build advocacy, campaign and project management skills so that the participants could create new projects or enhance existing projects that directly contribute to the Aichi Biodiversity Targets and the implementation of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs);

  • become familiar with the GYBN policy platform that young people can partake in to contribute to the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework;

  • connect with each other and speak about the networks and organizations that they represent at the regional, national or local levels in order to increase public and youth engagement, awareness and political will for biodiversity conservation.

The GYBN Europe+ community was formed by the participants of the workshop in Austria and serves to connect and aid GYBN Europe+ members who are remedying the societal division between humankind and nature by reconnecting the people in their local communities with the local nature and biodiversity through their own work or the work of their groups and organizations.

Currently, GYBN Europe+ is in the process of running Youth Consultations which aim to collect the aspirations that the young people of Europe have for biodiversity on the local, national, continental and international levels and get these ambitious visions to policymakers in the CBD before the 2020 CBD COP-15, where representatives of many countries will convene to discuss and approve the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework for the coming decade.
